Welcome! Meet:

John + Heidi

Fiscal Analyst / Health Care Software

All About John & Heidi

Hello, We are Heidi, John, and Lily. Thank you for taking the time to consider our family as the recipient of the most precious gift anyone can give. We have been together for more than 17 years and have lived in the Madison area since 2003. We love the area and have been here ever since Heidi took a job with a local software company. John works for the state government and Lily is an unemployed five-year-old who loves swimming and playing at the park next door. As a family, we enjoy dancing, movies, baseball games, and just spending time together. Our community, Verona, has many fun festivals and a nice small-town feel with big-town amenities. We are excited to grow our family and would love the chance to meet with you.

Why Adoption?

In 2014 we were blessed to become parents for the first time with our daughter, Lily. Parenting has become the most challenging, yet rewarding time of our lives. We have so much more love to give and know that adoption is the best way to complete our family.

Family & Home

John: I was born and raised in Southern Illinois next to St. Louis. I am a huge fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, and baseball in general, and try to catch at least a few games each year. I met Heidi at the University of Illinois and later moved to the exotic and faraway land of Wisconsin, where I went to law school at UW Madison. I enjoy cooking and eating, although I’m way better at one than the other. Aside from sitting in traffic, I spend my time reading, poorly shooting pool, watching Netflix movies, hanging out with friends, and playing blocks and dress-up dance party with my daughter Lily. I work as a fiscal analyst for the state government. Our work is highly seasonal. After the busy period drops off when the Legislature passes the two-year budget bill, I try to take a day off each week to be with Lily.

Heidi: I was raised in the Good Ole’ Land of Lincoln, Springfield, IL. Growing up in a small city is what initially made Madison so attractive to me when I was looking for a job after graduation. Luckily John agreed and we moved here in 2003. That’s when I started my forever career in healthcare software. I feel very passionate about the opportunities I receive every day to improve healthcare quality and access across the country and world. Outside of my career, you could say I dance through life. Ever since I was a young girl I loved dance. Performing, teaching, learning new styles, you name it. John has always supported my love of dance and even joined me in The Nutcracker one year. I secretly know he had a ton of fun, though he won’t admit it. My biggest passion revolves around being a parent. It was truly a life-changing experience in more ways than one. Time that was previously filled with long elaborate meals out with friends is now filled with wiping little faces and hands and asking her not to eat only ketchup for dinner. But I wouldn’t change it for anything.

We have lived in the Madison area since 2003 and love it.  As a family, we enjoy dancing, movies, baseball games, and just spending time together.  Our community, Verona, has many fun festivals and a nice small-town feel with big-town amenities.

How others describe me

Words from our friends:

Heidi and John are two of the most generous people I know. Not only are they willing to help me and my family out when we ask for help, but they are always offering to do things to make our life better and easier completely unsolicited. For example, this past spring when I mentioned I was having a hard time getting my garden in due to recent surgery, Heidi jumped in and offered to be there that weekend shovel in hand (and she was). I can't say how much that meant to me. They are also always the first to sign up for meal trains, to offer to babysit or to invite us over for a meal.
Heidi and John are one of those couples that just - work. When I first met them both 10 years ago, I was struck by how different their personalities were, but how well they still got along despite those differences and how much in love they seemed to be. That's still the case today.
Heidi and John are great parents, not only to their own daughter but to my kids as well. When our families are together, both of them are always quick to jump in to help with bathroom trips, calming down upset toddlers, picking up dropped baby toys, etc. Because of this, our daughters adore them and their daughter Lily. We are actually closer to them than they are to most of their own relatives. We trust their parenting so completely that we've actually named them as guardians of our children in our wills.
Both Heidi and John are great listeners and great friends. I can't list the number of times that Heidi's been there for me when I've needed to talk, and I can honestly say that I've always felt that John would be there to listen if the need ever arose as well.

how we met

How We Met

Our story started at the University of Illinois during our last year before graduation. Right away we hit it off mostly because of our shared humor. Our first date actually ended up being a barn dance at an off-campus location. We often say it felt like starting out as kids because we traveled to the dance on a school bus with butterflies in our stomachs sitting next to our crushes. Nineteen years later we still feel those butterflies.

Advice to Future Child

Adoption will be a natural part of our child's story.  There won't be any particular moment when they find out they are adopted; they would always know since before they could remember. We would let them know from a very early age and make adoption a reoccurring theme in our conversations.  They would understand from adoption-themed books at storytime and photographs at home that adoption is an act of unconditional love and that adoption is a positive, special part of their life.  We believe that an open, honest, and age-appropriate dialogue is the best way to support and help our child understand where they come from and how much they are loved.

Perspectives on Open Adoption

Though we do not know each other quite yet, we are sure you are strong and have a lot of love for your child. We will continue to show your child that kind of fierce love and strength as they grow up. After placement with us, we will send letters and pictures to share your child's journey and all the important milestones.
