All About David & Raphi

Hello! We are David and Raphi (plus our kiddo, Simon). Thanks for taking the time to learn a little more about us.

We are a loving and hilarious (at least we think so…) family of three living in Portland, OR. Our favorite activities include great food and walking around the city, reading, and fresh berry picking during the summer. Fun facts about David are that he has lived on three continents and loves all things boy bands. Raphi loves to study math and science and can speak three languages. Our kiddo Simon is a scooter champion and plays in a band with other toddlers!

Thank you for reading a little bit about us. We can’t wait to meet you!

Why Adoption?

During our first date over mozzarella sticks and nachos, we discussed our parenting aspirations. Both of us felt strongly that we wanted to grow our family through adoption. As we learned more, it became clear that open adoption was right for us because we wanted our child to understand why their birth family chose us and how we became one family. With our first child, we have seen the power of the open relationship and welcoming the birth family into ours. Though David is now allergic to both gluten and dairy, our desires to become parents through open adoption have not wavered.

Family & Home

We love our home, which is at the intersection of city life and quiet streets. We looked for a while to find the right house that was near great schools, walkable shops, and had a charming neighborhood feel. Our house was built over one hundred years ago but modernized several years ago, so it feels brand new. Simon loves playing basketball in the driveway and helping grow herbs in the backyard. With 3 grocery stores nearby, he zips along on his scooter when we go to buy what we need.

We live a three minute walk from the elementary school and ten minutes from the high school. Our street has lots of toddlers which make for great built in play dates.

We spend weekends exploring new parks, as Simon is determined to find and ride every slide and see-saw in every park! Other favorite activities include walking to eat at food trucks and picking up all the rocks on our street. Simon is already a seasoned traveler, with multiple trips across the country to visit family and friends.

We’ve learned to love the Pacific Northwest’s laid-back attitude and late sunny summer nights. On weekends, you will find us “urban hiking”, also known as walking to a new restaurant and exploring one of Portland’s many neighborhoods. We love to see movies at theaters where you can buy seats in advance and to take full advantage of the Public Library system. Friends play an important role in our lives, and we regularly make time to connect with them. We have a great friend group that includes a variety of other adoption families so Simon grows up belonging to a community that validates him. We finish up many evenings taking walks together in our neighborhood and sharing the most important moments from our day.

We facetime daily with both of our families, including Simon’s 100 year old great - grandfather! Both of us are very close with our siblings and parents. We travel to see them several times a year and are grateful for technology allowing them to be an active part of Simon’s life.

How others describe me

David was initially drawn to Raphi’s easy laugh, snazzy style, and knowledge of all things science. Over the years, he has learned to love Raphi’s refusal to change out of his dress clothes until it’s time to go to bed and serving as the “sous chef” for Raphi’s culinary adventures (which mostly involves tasting the sauces and setting the table).

Raphi was initially struck by David’s clever wit, passion for both gossip magazines and Sports Illustrated, and his cadre of close lifelong friends. Over the years, Raphi has learned to love cheering for the Cleveland Cavaliers, David’s insistence that sweat pants can be worn outside of the house, and David’s ever-growing sneaker collection (tolerated only because Raphi shares the same shoe-size).

how we met

How We Met

We met in July 2010 in New York City. Raphi was interning there for the summer while in graduate school and we immediately bonded over our love for the movie “Mean Girls”, quality sushi, traveling abroad, and reading Harry Potter. Four weeks after meeting, Raphi returned to Boston to finish school and we began to date long-distance.

Raphi returned to NYC in 2011, and for the next three years we began to build our life together.  We left NYC in 2014 for Chicago so that David could complete his MBA. Those two years finished during a whirlwind week in 2016 where David graduated from business school, the Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA championship, and we got married in Cleveland! From there, we packed our bags and moved to Portland, OR, where we have lived ever since.

Advice to Future Child

We want to allow our children to be the best version of themselves. We want them to know that they are loved, that they are capable, and that they are valued. We want to nourish a loving and supporting relationship between Simon and his sibling, and dread the day that they gang up on us the way we did to our parents!

Perspectives on Open Adoption

With our first child, we have seen the power of the open relationship and welcoming the birth family into ours. Simon is growing up with photos in his room of his birth family and we meet with them several times a year, in addition to exchanding regular photos and FaceTime. It’s clear to us already that Simon benefits from this relationship, and that will only increase as he gets older. As he matures and comes into his own, we are excited to watch and support this relationship blossom ever more. We hope to have a similar relationship for our future child and their birth family.

Raphi and David’s moms grill fish for dinner, and we walk into the small town for ice cream and sorbet each night. Simon gets to spend tons of time with both sets of his grandparents. We stay through New Year’s, and must admit that we are usually asleep by 11 PM on New Year’s Eve.
