Hi! We’re grateful that you’re considering us as adoptive parents and recognize that this is a big decision for you. We love our family and are so excited to grow it through adoption. We hope our profile will give you a sense of who we are and the many joys and passions that fill our everyday life.
We are both teachers and writers who love to learn! Gen was born in Montreal and then split her time between Canada and New York. She grew up speaking both French and English and moved to South Africa in college to study music. Shannon also has a passion for traveling! When she was eleven years old, her family moved to Paris and she became fluent in French. In college, she then majored in Italian and lived in Italy for a year. Upon graduating, she moved back to France for two years to teach English. In graduate school, she spent a summer in the old medina in Fez, Morocco, where she learned Arabic. We both love exploring the world and learning about other languages and cultures. We regularly go to Mexico and Canada. And last year, we went to Antarctica! It was an amazing adventure.
We’re also life-long learners! We regularly attend plays, concerts, and lectures. Avid writers, we enroll in creative writing seminars and online classes whenever we can. We also love learning outside of the classroom. Shannon recently learned how to drive (beep! beep!) and Gen took saxophone lessons. We also joined a local Habitat for Humanity organization called “Women’s Build” and now build houses every fall. We also love attending women’s basketball games, working out, going for long hikes with our Bernedoodle, Wyatt, or enjoying a good latte at our local coffee shop. We can’t wait to learn alongside our child and help them discover their unique interests and passions!
We have often talked about growing our family through adoption. We are excited to open our home and our hearts to your child and to give them the support they need to flourish. Now that we are settled in Indiana with flexible and stable jobs, we are excited to take the next step and become parents. Our dog, Wyatt, also loves children and will be equally thrilled to welcome a new member of our family.
With tall grasses and evergreens in the front yard, our home has three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a finished basement, and a fenced yard. It is both cozy and spacious. We live a short walk from an elementary school, a park, and community pool. We are also a few blocks from a large university known for its music program, theater, and sports. The university attracts a diverse community with many languages, religions, and cultural activities. We also have lots of festivals, activities, and international food to choose from!
We have a strong network of friends who are excited for us to adopt and who have volunteered to help us out in any way they can. We also continued to keep in touch with our friends that we met in graduate school and on the East Coast when we lived and worked in New Jersey.
We are both very close to their families. Gen has four older half-siblings and one twin brother. All of her siblings have children and their children now have children. Her mom’s house is a landing pad for many relatives, so it still bustles with kids splashing in the pool, chats around the diner table, and lots of laughs. Shannon’s family is smaller than Gen’s but equally dynamic. Shannon has one younger sister who lives in Wisconsin with her three boys. Shannon also has two older half-brothers who live in Seattle and San Diego. And while Shannon’s brothers never lived nearby, they visit each other often.
"Shannon is growth-oriented and self-reflective in ways that will make her a good co-parent and guide for our child. Her enthusiasm is infectious and her outgoing nature will continue to build a strong community around us. Shannon also leads with nonjudgmental openness that will allow us all to explore and learn together." – Gen about Shannon
"Gen is the perfect combination of calm and curious, playful and serious. She takes on challenges in an even-keeled and thoughtful way--something that I admire. I'm in awe of her generosity towards others and her commitment to introspection. She will be a steady, loving, and joyful parent to our child." –Shannon about Gen
We met in graduate school at the University of Michigan in 2008, where we connected over our love of world languages and literature. Shannon also appreciated Gen’s dry wit, even temperament, and love of the outdoors. Gen loved Shannon’s giggle, her spontaneity, and openness to trying new things. We started going on walks with Gen’s two dogs and our relationship blossomed from there! In November 2023, we returned to the school playground in our old neighborhood in Ann Arbor to get married. That was the same park where we first fell in love over a decade ago!
Please know that we will love you no matter what. So, don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things! That’s how you grow (we speak from first-hand experience). It’s also okay if you don’t have all of the answers. No one is perfect and everyone needs help, so be sure to ask for support–from us and others–when you need it.
We are excited about the possibility of an open adoption if that seems right for the birth parent. We are open to texting, Zoom or other phone calls and visits. We recognize that each situation is different and that a birth mother’s feelings about possible contact may change over time. We’re committed to being adaptable and to honoring and respecting her wishes, whatever they may be. We also promise to talk to our child about where they came from.
