Hello! We are Polly and Jacob. We live in Washington state, where both of us grew up. We have been together for 10 years, and were friends for seven years before that. We lived together in the Bay Area in California for a number of years before resettling in Washington three years ago. We have a fun life with lots of friends and family nearby. On a given weekend, you might find Jacob playing rugby, Polly attending a play or both of us working in our garden together. We both like cooking, and eating dinner together each night. For work, Polly works as a program manager, and Jacob works in construction. We both love to learn new things and travel to new places. We live in the city of Tacoma, in an old neighborhood with lots of families, within walking distance to restaurants and parks. Our parents and siblings live nearby, and we love to be able to offer frequent babysitting to our niece and nephew.
Polly’s family has some history of adoption, and when we discussed how we wanted to build our family, adoption felt like the right path for us. The more we have learned about open adoption, the more sure we feel about this decision. We have a lot of experience building families across biological lines, which makes us confident in this decision. We are very committed to openness as parents throughout our child’s life, and hope their birth family will always feel welcomed and included in our home. We’re excited to grow new connections through open adoption.
We live in a cozy brick house with a small garden that we love working in. In the summer, we’re able to make lots of meals with vegetables from our garden, and love giving away bouquets of our homegrown flowers to neighbors. Community is very important to us, and we make it a point to attend and invest in community events. Polly is a member of League of Women Voters, and volunteers as a companion to hospice patients. Jacob plays rugby with our local team, and loves playing trivia at nearby spots. We have extended family close by, as well as an extended network of friends who we know will be strong branches of our support system as we raise children. A fun tradition in Jacob’s family is spray-painting a giant shamrock in their neighborhood crosswalk each St. Patrick’s Day, with the help of friends and neighbors– it’s a well known local landmark! We have taken on the tradition of hosting Polly’s extended family and friends on Christmas Eve for a potluck gathering around the Christmas tree.
From Polly: Jacob is a great sport. He is always game to try new things, with his full enthusiasm. He is not only easy to be with, but also fun, and helps me think about our world in new ways. I love to plan out a day with him, because whether it’s a fun adventure or mundane errands and chores, I know he will be pleasant to be around and share great conversation. I have full trust in him, and know he has my best interests at heart, always.
From Jacob: Polly is kind and caring. She is invested in her community, family and friends. When a friend gets sick or has a baby, she is quick to arrive with soup and helping hands. She is artistic and funny and fun to be around. Polly has an adventurous spirit and plans fun outings for us to do. I am grateful for our open communication with each other.
Jacob and Polly went to high school together a few grades apart. A few years after high school we became friends and a few years after that we started dating long-distance. Later, we spent 7 years in the California Bay Area together, and then moved to Tacoma where we have been for three years. Our relationship is built on trust and honesty. We have a lot of fun together, enjoying life’s little moments like weeknight dinners or a game of cards, and supporting each other through life’s big moments like births and deaths.

Open adoption allows for more doorways for us to connect with one another and build our families across boundaries. We believe strongly in the opportunities openness provides adoptees to better understand their origins and themselves.
