Thanks for taking the time to look at our profile! We're thrilled to finally be starting our family together and hope that you see something in us that connects with you.
Since the early days of our relationship, and much longer for Jessica, we have planned to build our family together through adoption and foster. Although we've been ready to begin this journey for a few years, we wanted to be more rooted and live closer to our family before bringing home a baby. Throughout this process, we've also developed a strong interest in keeping the adoption open so that our adopted child knows their biological family and knows the story of where they come from. We feel that we understand what it means to be adoptive parents as much as we can at this stage in the journey, and are ready to share this journey and our lives.
We’d look forward to meeting you and getting to know each other!
Our Home
We live in Charleston, South Carolina, and love everything our city has to offer! We live outside the city in a home perfect for hosting, something that was very important to us to ensure that friends and family are always comfortable visiting. We love that our neighborhood is lush and diverse, with families of all ages, and yards full of live oak trees. The front of our neighborhood has a park and community center, and the back has a small boat launch that gives us access to the Ashley River. On the weekends, you can find us hosting friends and family and showing them around town, working on a project at home, exploring new parts of Charleston, hitting the beach, or getting out on our fishing boats or kayaks.
Our Families and Friends
Jessica was born and raised in Florida. Her parents live a 3 hour drive away in Atlantic Beach, her brother in Miami. While Jessica's brother does not intend to have children he is very excited to be an uncle and loves spending time with the children already in his life from all of his friends. Jessica's parents cannot wait to be grandparents and are very supportive of our choice to adopt.
Kyle's brother lives in the D.C. area, a long but doable 7-hour drive from us. Kyle and Jessica are godparents to their little nephew Theo, whom they love visiting as much as possible. Kyle's parents live in Wisconsin and have been making regular trips to see their new grandson. They all can't wait to meet a new member of the family when one arrives.
Through our travels (we've lived in 9 states and 2 countries), we have been fortunate to form many close friendships across the US and abroad. When we told everyone about our plans to adopt, every one of them was excited to meet our child and be "aunties and uncles". Our child will be surrounded by love and support both locally and around the world.
A Little About Our Lives Together
We share a love of everything outdoors - from backpacking to rock climbing, kayaking to snowboarding. We are lucky to have a small boat launch in our neighborhood, which we love to use to launch our kayaks or to just let our doggo Sunny Rae run around and swim. When we hear the mountains calling, we drive 4 hours out towards Asheville, NC for hiking and climbing in Pisgah National Forest.
We love working with our hands and are frequently tackling some sort of DIY project around the house - whether fixing our cars, renovating our house, or building our garden. We both love food and are always trying out new recipes at home.
Finally we just love Charleston! There's so much to do in our city. Amazing parks, great food, and multiple beaches. We love taking advantage of everything our city has to offer.
We can't wait to introduce our little one to all the things we love to do, and find new passions alongside our adopted child when they begin to explore their own interests.
Meet Kyle
Kyle is the Vice President of Engineering for Noovo camper vans. He loves that he gets to put his talents for engineering towards creating tools for adventure and outdoor recreation. He spends as much time tinkering at home as he does at work. Kyle likes using his 3D printer and a garage full of tools to fix things or build prototypes for his many projects and start-ups. He's also on the board of the local nonprofit Makerspace, a place for members to work on DIY projects together
Kyle loves putting his creative mind to use in the kitchen and can often be found experimenting with sourdough. He is a very patient baker! He is also very adept at languages and loves studying a new language in his free time. Kyle is fluent in German, and also loves to keep up with French, Chinese, and Japanese.
Meet Jessica
Jessica is a Museum Curator for the National Park Service. She manages museum collections for all the parks in South Carolina, including Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie. She loves that she gets to combine her love of the outdoors and public lands with her career passion of taking care of historical objects. Jessica also has a certification as a Wildland Firefighter and will occasionally help with wildfires or controlled burns in the area. Jessica's career has taken Kyle and Jessica across the country, from Yosemite in California to Lake Mead in Las Vegas. She took her current job in South Carolina to get her and Kyle back to their family on the East Coast, where they intend to stay and are excited to plant roots and raise a family.
Jessica loves spending time identifying all the plants and birds in the area. She enjoys caring for plants, whether it's the garden or the many houseplants she keeps around the home. Jessica is also a part of the local roller derby team, the Lowcountry Highrollers. She loves staying active through skating and being part of a community of strong, competitive women.
In the summer of 2016, Jessica was hiking through rural Colorado with some new friends she'd met backpacking. At the same moment, Kyle was about to deliver pizza and candy to his hungry hiker friends and take them into town to resupply for the next leg of their hike. Neither knew how important that pizza delivery would be to their lives.
Months later, we were officially together. In the spring of 2019, we got engaged while in a long-distance relationship. We moved in together just as COVID lockdowns ramped up, and despite postponing the date, we were finally married in 2021.
Do what you love, and stay open-minded! We hope to create a welcoming space for any child we raise to be able to explore endlessly and find their passions. There is no singular definition of what ‘success’ means, and they should be able to explore the world, their interests, their talents, and their passions. While doing so, we hope they stay open-minded and kind. There are so many people in this world, and if we try, we can find a way to connect to all of them. We hope to raise children who are considerate and welcoming to the world around them.
It is very important to us to raise children who know where they came from. We are happy to stay connected to our adopted child's birth parent(s) and come up with a plan together for staying involved in each others’ lives. There are so many great books and resources for adopted children and adoptive parents now. We know we will continuously educate ourselves throughout this journey, and plan on raising children surrounded by books and narratives that let them know what adoption means from the very beginning.
