All About Mitch & Katy

We are Mitch and Katy Rasmussen, and we live in Tacoma, WA in a quiet neighborhood with cute brick houses and lots of pine trees. Katy’s personality is conscientious, soft-spoken, and cheerful. She has a passion for life and a love of beauty and the arts, but is generally the practical one in the family. She works as a critical care nurse at a local hospital. In her free time she enjoys playing the cello and is part of a local orchestra called the Ensign Symphony. She absolutely loves it. She also enjoys making home-made sourdough bread, and home-made yoghurt. She hopes to spend the next many years raising children, and then return to nursing as an instructor at a local university.

Mitch is in the army, with a humble, easygoing personality. While Katy is conscientious and organized, Mitch is creative and open to new experiences. He can always look at things from a different angle, and has a talent for not judging people. For fun, he enjoys collecting exotic musical instruments, reading, and working on his endless list of creative projects. Mitch has a terrific memory, and is always studying for some certification or class, anything from yoga to cybersecurity. He is passionate about preventing exercise-induced injuries in his soldiers, and enjoys preparing workouts the “right” way. He is particularly resilient, being the only soldier I ever heard complain that bootcamp was “too easy.” Despite the army lifestyle he is surrounded with, he does not swear, and has never touched alcohol, tobacco, or any substances. He has taken on the role of "unofficial chaplain,” for his soldiers and many turn to him with their troubles because he is such a good listener. When he does have a hard day, he leans on his wife and they support each other. Although resilient in daily life, he has a low tolerance for contention and he dissipates it before it even starts. He is the reason for most of the harmony in our home.

Why Adoption?

We are pursuing adoption because we want a family! We both love the families we came from and feel that there is nothing in the world as important and as a wonderful family. We knew for many years that we would likely not be able to have biological children, but the timing didn’t feel right to pursue adoption until recently. In the last year or so, kids are pretty much all we can talk or think about!

Family & Home

We live in a quiet neighborhood near Lakewood, WA. Our community is mostly our extended family, of which we have a lot! We are on good terms with everyone in the family and particularly close to Katy’s older sister, Susy, who is less than two years older. The two of them basically grew up as twins. Katy’s mom is also a big part of our lives and she makes a point to call several times per week. Mitch is the oldest of five siblings and is probably closer to his parents than his siblings, but he keeps in touch pretty well with everyone.

How others describe me

Mitch is the kindest person I know. He is humble and eager to please and he intuitively knows when people need help or are down and he lifts them up. He is endlessly curious and always learning. What I find most remarkable about Mitch, though, is that he has this joy in him that allows him to wake up at 5 AM singing silly little songs, just happy to be alive. No matter what happens, Mitch has this constant feeling that everything will be okay. If a miserable day occurs, or there is a big disappointment, he gets upset, of course, like anyone would. But given a couple hours, he’s usually back to his baseline happiness. I think he’s this way because despite his easygoing nature, the things that matter, like faith and family, he takes seriously. Underneath all the jokes, he’s sincerely trying to be a better person every day. This gives him a peace of conscience and a rare serenity that brings peace to our home.

Katy is not just my wife but my best friend too. Her smile lights up the room and brightens me up every day. She is a wonderful nurse and cares for patients. She is an advocate for pain management and always tries to make sure patients feel like people, not just patients. Her use of music connects her to the spiritual side of things and brings a special spirit to the home. Katy is never complacent about her family and is always working to connect with her immediate and extended family. She is definitely an introvert, doesn’t like to be in the spotlight, but she is so great at connecting deeply with people one-on-one. She is always planning for the future, setting goals and working on self-improvement. She takes great pride in home-making and loves to create a cozy, peaceful atmosphere in the home.

how we met

How We Met

They say there’s no such thing as a match made in heaven but….who knows? Mitch’s mom prayed once that his angel grandma would set him up with a good wife. Grandma was always a good matchmaker, you see. Sure enough, we met that week.

That was about eight years ago in college in Rexburg, Idaho. At the time we were two spontaneous, airy-minded youngsters and we fell head-over-heels in love with each other. I loved that Mitch was this redneck gentleman who could ballroom dance and tell me all about pigs and chickens. He thought I was cute and classy with my cello and fluent Italian. We got married young, in our early twenties, and both agree it was the best decision we ever made. He says he loves my moral consistency and compassionate nature. I never tire of his tranquil, cheery nature, bringing peace with him wherever he goes.

Advice to Future Child

I hope you always remember that love is never wasted. Even if people are cruel to you, be kind in return. Kindness is free--you have nothing to lose and everything to gain from it.

Remember Jesus. He never forgets you.

Life is so precious. Be grateful for every minute you have.

We are all at different points at different times for a variety of reasons. What matters is the slope--your direction and momentum!

Listen to your gut, you’re probably wiser than you think.

Do not EVER give up.

Don’t forget to laugh.

Don’t forget that life is beautiful. Because it is, even when everything around you points to the contrary. Don’t wait till the sun comes out to remember there is sun behind the clouds.

Faith is often the first and the last thing we learn.

Perspectives on Open Adoption

We have no issues with an open adoption. Mitch’s aunt gave a couple of her kids up for adoption and kept it an open adoption. She sees her birth kids a couple times a year and takes them camping and they call her “Auntie.” She says she has no regrets about her decision and is very pleased with the current level of contact. We envision a similar relationship with a birth mother who becomes a part of the extended family much like an Aunt.
