In 2015, we found out that we were unable to conceive biological children. While this news was unexpected, we both felt this peaceful, strong desire to pursue adoption. Our first son ended up being placed with us just months later!
We recently pursued our dream of moving to beautiful, Southern Utah. We were comfortable in Arizona where we were prior to this, but something inside pushed us to finally make the move. Scott found a job where he could work from home permanently and we were able to build our dream home on a large lot with grass, a pickleball court and playground. Everything fell into place so perfectly and we have never been happier. We have neighbor kids to play with every single day. There are parks and a brand new school in the neighborhood. Our favorite part is that we live right at the trails, so anytime we want to hike or go out on our RZR or quads/dirt bikes, we can just go out of our garage! And, you can’t forget the beautiful national and state parks that are practically in our backyard. We love to camp and be in the outdoors! It’s also fun to have family in driving distance so we are able to do more with grandparents, cousins and birth families!
Scott (according to Katie): Growing up just down the street from each other, Scott was always my older brother's best friend. We became best friends as I got older, and as I would go to him for dating advice, I realized that he was exactly what I was looking for in a future spouse. What stood out the most to me was that he is strong in our religion, he is driven in his education and career, he is great with kids, and he is fun to be around (although enjoys pushing my buttons at times!). He genuinely always wants me to be happy and constantly showers me with compliments and kisses. Although he "tries" to look tough and do tough things, he is a big teddy bear and a solid provider for our family. Watching Scott walk through the door and hearing L and C yell, "Dada!!!" and the bear hugs that follow will never get old, and we can't wait to add more children to the mix.
Katie (according to Scott): Throughout the time that I have known Katie, she has always been a fun and loving person to be around. Her love for me has always been unconditional and unwavering and I have seen her pass that same love to L and C while dedicating her life to making sure they are loved, happy and safe. I have never seen someone with as much energy to play with and love children as she does! That is probably why my family loves her so much and loves to have their children spend time with her. She has such a deep love for children that she gives them her all, sometimes even making me a little bit jealous! One of the reasons we initially became best friends is because Katie is very easy to get along with. I know that Katie is excited to have more children that she can raise, spend time with, and become best friends with.
Scott and Katie "technically" met when Katie moved into Scott's neighborhood in Utah when she was 3 and Scott was 12. He came over to her house for scouts and when Katie answered the door in a pull-up, it was love at first sight! Not really, but after about 15 years of Scott hanging around Katie's older brother (and Katie), we decided to start dating and in 2011, we were married.
While we wish we could promise that our children will have a perfect life free of the challenges that come from living in this world, we can promise that our children will be taught about who they are, where they came from, and what their potential is. They will be taught how to be independent and how to love and serve others. Most importantly, our children will never have to doubt that they are loved unconditionally. The amount of love we have for each other, our sons, our future children, our family, and life in general feels impossible to convey in just a few short pages. We hope that you enjoy this small glimpse into our life and can see how genuinely excited we are at the possibility of sharing every bit of it with another child.
Open adoption has been the most rewarding part of our entire adoption experience! The kids have great relationships with their birth families, and they each know their story at age appropriate levels. That evolves as they get older, of course, but the fact that they already know and love their birth families is such a huge help in teaching them about adoption and where they came from. We and their birth families work closely together to be as transparent as possible with our sons, and these kids are loved by so many people! It truly is a privilege to be involved with their incredible birth families.
