All About Dominic & Mohan

We are a happily married couple in New York City. Soon after we met seven years ago, we knew we wanted to be dads together. We’re so excited to grow our family through adoption.

Our very different careers and unique skills complement each other. Whereas Mohan (an attorney) is highly organized and analytical, Dominic (an artist) can come up with creative ways to address issues.

Food and cooking are central to our lives. Gathering around the dinner table with our friends and family is one of our favorite things to do. Mohan enjoys making Chinese dumplings, noodles and stir fries, Indian biriyani, Sri Lankan curries, Korean stews and Thai salads. Dominic likes to cook homemade pastas and braising sauces with veggies and herbs from our garden. It will be fun to do cooking projects with our child and teach them how to roll fresh pasta, fold dumplings and the joy of sharing homemade food with your loved ones.

It is important to us that our child is exposed to diverse cultures. Travel has always been a passion of ours, and we plan to travel to new countries every year with our child. So far, we've traveled around Sri Lanka with our mothers, road tripped around Morocco, hunted for the best tacos in Mexico City, and visited art museums in London and Paris. We can't wait to fill up our child's passport!

We both love art and many of our friends work in creative fields. We love going to gallery openings, spending a day at a museum, and going to the ballet. Our child will grow up in a home filled with art, music and books.

Why Adoption?

Adoption is important to us because as a same-sex couple, we never thought we would be able to start a family. As a mixed-race couple, we know what it’s like to have multiple cultures under one roof. We are so grateful for the opportunity to grow our family through adoption and look forward to celebrating a child’s unique cultural background.

We can’t imagine how challenging it must be to choose a family to take care of your baby. We admire your courageous decision to choose adoption and are so grateful to be considered by you.

Family & Home

We always knew that we wanted to expand our family, so last year we expanded our home by purchasing the apartment next door and renovating it to combine it with our old apartment. Our new apartment has two bedrooms, including one for our baby to grow into. We love living in the East Village neighborhood because of its many parks and trees (which can be rare in New York City!), its diverse community and culture, and the many amazing restaurants with food from all over the world.

As much as we love NYC, we also enjoy getting out into nature. We go to our farmhouse in upstate New York most weekends and often host our family and friends for holidays. Our 40 acres includes flower gardens, lots of lawn for playing games, forests to hike and explore, an old apple orchard, and a creek.

In the summer, it will be fun to pick all the fruits, vegetables, and flowers we grow with our child. Dom loves to grow lots of varieties of tomatoes, but his favorites are the cucumbers. Mohan loves growing spicy chiles for homemade hot sauces. There are blueberry, blackberry, raspberry and rhubarb bushes and walnut, hazelnut, and pear trees. We look forward to sledding and building snowmen with our child in the winter, and warming up by our cozy fireplace with hot chocolate. We can't wait to spend time outdoors with our child and passing on our passion for gardening, sustainability, and nature.

Family is at the center of who we are. We are lucky that our families get along well together and have melded into one big family with its own unique traditions. One of those is for both of our families to spend Memorial Day weekend with us at our upstate farmhouse. We play lawn games, prepare the garden for the summer, and cook outside by the fire. Our son or daughter is going to have a blast joining in the fun!

We recently became godfathers to twin girls, the daughters of two of our best friends. It’s been so amazing to watch them grow. We’ve learned a lot from their mom and dad, too, about what it’s like to be new parents.

You can’t get a full picture of our family without knowing our dog, Ooma. Ooma is a rescue dog from Alabama that we adopted in 2016 and immediately fell in love with. She’s an energetic beauty that is full of love and loyalty for us and our friends. She loves playing gently with our toddler goddaughters.

How others describe me

Dominic (by Mohan):

Dominic is the best person I know. He is funny, creative and caring. Dom makes breakfast for me every day, and by the time we sit down to eat, he will have made me laugh at least once. He is an artist, and I couldn’t imagine any other career for him. Dom is always learning, thinking, and creating. He is very good with his hands and can pick up skills easily. He built shelves and cabinets for our bathroom and kitchen, put up drywall, and most impressively, he quickly mastered the art of making a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast, indiappa, which my mom taught him how to make. He loves reading stories out loud and I can’t wait to see him read to our child, which I know he is so excited to do. I also can’t wait to see the creative projects he will do with our child and know he will give him or her more than I can even imagine. Dom also loves and gives time to his family, friends, and community, He has an inherent sense of service for others. Like I said, he is the best person I know.

Mohan (by Dominic):

Mohan is smart, committed and compassionate. When we first met, Mohan was studying to go to law school. On one of our first dates, I took him to my favorite New York City beach, and he brought his law books. We spent the afternoon swimming, doing handstands, and working on logic puzzles together. It was a mixture of fun and learning that I came to know is 100% Mohan. He is fiercely loyal and family-oriented, traits he learned from his mom and dad. Mohan and I share a desire to nurture and are eager to put that energy toward a family of our own. After 7 years together, two of them married, we’ve worked hard to get prepared to become fathers. I’ve witnessed and benefited from his intelligence and calm wisdom and know Mohan is ready to be a father.

how we met

How We Met

Our first date represents us well: Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but together, we’ve always been able to make it work, make each other laugh, and find something beautiful in the end.

Here’s what happened—On our first date, the sole of Dominic’s shoe came undone as we were walking to the movies. Cracking up the entire time, we quickly ran (Dom sort of hopped) into the nearest store to find a way to fix the shoe. Super glue did the trick, but we ended up missing the movie. We decided to walk across town to a different theater and ended up watching a different movie, "Only Lovers Left Alive", a beautiful and funny movie about two vampires who have been in love for centuries. We definitely made the best of the evening and realized we found something special in each other. Since that first date, we've built a life filled with love and support, laughing and discovering new things along the way.

Advice to Future Child

We want you to be proud of yourself and confident in your ability to achieve anything you want. We will do everything in our ability to give you those tools. We hope you recognize the power in a good education: It can open up so many doors for you and give you the tools to do whatever you want.

You should always care for others, especially those most in need. Be empathetic and be accepting of how others are different from you.

You come from more than one place, and that makes you incredibly unique and beautiful.

Always be curious. Always ask questions. Never accept that things have to be the way they are because someone told you so.

Have a sense of humor and be able to laugh at yourself.

Be curious about art and music, they are great ways to expand your mind and see things in a new way.

Perspectives on Open Adoption

We see immense value in open adoption: It will allow our child to have a connection to their birth culture and family, and the birth parent(s) will get the comfort of seeing their child grow up in a family full of unconditional love and support. We of course want to respect the wishes of the birth parent(s) and look forward to figuring out what level of openness works best for everyone.

  • Favorite Movie: I am Love
  • Favorite Holiday/Tradition: Celebrating Christmas has been a favorite family tradition since I was very young. It’s not just about the day but also involves lots of decorations, making caramels and cookies, and wrapping up gifts for friends and family. It’s a time of celebration and reflection.
  • Hobbies/Interests: art, photography, gardening, running and fashion
  • Dream Vacation: Anywhere that involves visits to art galleries and museums, archaeological sites, amazing food (especially street food), and a little time for rest. A good beach with lots of sun is also very appreciated.
  • If I Could Choose a Superpower: Telekinesis. I literally have recurring dreams about being able to move things with my mind and levitate. In the dreams, it’s very difficult to do and so seems very believable and plausible

  • Favorite Movie: The Lord of the Rings series
  • Favorite Holiday/Tradition: Memorial Day has become a new family tradition. Both sides of our family spend Memorial Day weekend with us at our farmhouse in Upstate New York. We play lawn games, plant our vegetables for the spring, and cook and eat outside.
  • Hobbies/Interests: cooking and gardening
  • Dream Vacation: eating tour across Asia: China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
  • If I Could Choose a Superpower: Teleportation! For two reasons: 1) I’d love to be able to visit family and friends around the world in a second and  2) traffic sucks!

We’re here to help.
