All About Emily

Hi, my name is Emily! I live in beautiful Portland, OR, in the heart of a sweet neighborhood filled with community gardens, good neighbors, and near green parks/nature spots. I share a home with my sweet pup Mina, a sleepy, well-natured, snuggle bug who loves everyone (and is great with kiddos). I’m so fortunate to be neighbors with my loving mama, Diana, and her playful Labradoodle, Lola. My heart feels so full imagining becoming a mom, and my own mama eagerly awaits the joy of becoming a grandma to my future child.

I LOVE music, especially Hip Hop, Soul music, oldies, 60’s rock, and so much more. I live for living room dance parties, and listening to my favorite songs while painting is one of my favorite pastimes. I’m a big appreciator of art and go to see art in the community (murals/art shows) and create my own art using acrylics. I’ve been an artist for years, and during my time as a preschool teacher often created portraits of the children in my classrooms and often volunteered to face paint at school events. I love time in nature with my dog, sharing meals with my mom, reading books, and traveling with friends.

I’m a community manager and work with creative people (photographers/illustrators) and small business owners from around the globe. I love that my work allows me to collaborate with so many inspiring people and I’ve made great friends through work, even traveling to Scotland, Mexico, and Spain to see them.

Why Adoption?

I’ve wanted to be a mom for as long as I can remember; the road to motherhood has included some challenges and losses, but these experiences have helped me become more resilient. I am so excited to be on the path to grow my family through adoption.

I’ve done a huge amount of exploring, reading, and learning about adoption, all that has reinforced my knowing this is the path for me. I’m aware of all the complexities of adoption, and am ready to step up and provide an amazing home and all the resources to help our child thrive.

My dream is to create a world for my child that’s filled with love, in an environment which feels safe to learn, grow, and explore. My early childhood education background gives me the confidence that I have all the tools to help my child grow socially and emotionally, and I look forward to nurturing their interests, sharing my love of art and music, reading to them, spending time outside, and of course raising them alongside my mom and wonderful circle of friends.

Family & Home

I live with my sweet mom in a beautiful home in North Portland, Oregon, within walking distance of community gardens, a pool, coffee shops, restaurants, and high-quality schools and childcare centers. I love so much about our home and neighborhood, but what I love most is how the nature here changes through all the seasons. So many of our neighbors love to garden, and we have every local tree, flower, bug, and bird in sight.

Our home is on a quiet residential block, and we have a lovely space with 4 bedrooms, a cozy living room, and a front and backyard made bright with flowers and trees. My mom loves to weave, and I love my art, and we have a creative area downstairs that we share. I look forward to enjoying arts and crafts with my child and playing in our family's beautiful backyard.

We share our home with Lola (7) and Mina (5), two loving, well-behaved, and child-friendly dogs. They enjoy exploring the yard, joining us on walks, and eating treats (of course). Both have spent ample time with children and infants, and we are confident they will be loving companions to any child who joins our home.

I share my home with my mom, Diana -- she is truly the light of my life. She is kindness and love personified, and can't wait to share this love with a grandchild. My father sadly passed away last November after a long battle with Parkinson's, but his kind heart, love of music, and appreciation for nature are things I can't wait to pass down to our child.

I have older brothers, 3 nieces, and 1 nephew who cannot wait for a cousin! Our extended family is close, and we look forward to sharing holidays, camping trips, and more!

My close friends are like family, and I consider them the extended village who will be part of our child's story sharing love, lessons, and exploring the world together! I am super lucky to have friends in my newer home (Portland) and life-long friends from my hometown San Francisco.

How others describe me

My friends and family would describe me as empathetic, kindhearted, fun-loving, resilient, and creative. My world centers around the people I care for, and I’m incredibly grateful to walk through life with this village. I pride myself in carrying my core values and heart into all I do, striving to always be kind and genuine at work, and in all areas of my personal life.

Advice to Future Child

I am going to quote one of my all-time favorite shows, Ted Lasso, and say I wish for our child to “Believe in Believing”. Life can be very challenging, and full of complex emotional experiences; but life is also very beautiful, and there is so much to believe in and hope for. I have gone through a bunch of losses the last few years, and remembering this advice has helped me to stay resilient in the face of sadness, and to persevere knowing there is so much to be grateful for/look forward to in life. Second, I would encourage them to lean on friends and family through tough times. It’s important to have a strong core and sense of autonomy to navigate life bumps, but your community is so important to grow and thrive in life. I hope to teach our child the value of protecting and nurturing these relationships, and living a life built on a foundation of love.

Perspectives on Open Adoption

Building an open relationship with my child’s birth family is something I feel so passionate about. Depending on the comfort of the child’s birth family, I would love to build a relationship that includes not only photos and check-ins, but opportunities to connect in real life and help this child know all the wonderful people that make up their story. I want this child to feel that they have an open door to meet siblings, grandparents, and to know their biological parents. I want them to feel they have a constellation of people to turn to in life with questions, and a beautiful circle of loving people to lean on through life's ups and downs. Adoption is complex, and brings so many unique emotions with it, but my goal is give our child strong family roots, a sense of belonging, and access to all the people who love them.
